The Story of Assertive Beginnings

While the country had fun over the removal of GST on sanitary napkins, Dhilsha Jubair, an SBI Youth for India Fellow, who changed into working with the NGO Barefoot College in Tilonia had a distinct tale to tell us. The tale is of the dismal state of menstrual hygiene and attention in that tiny hamlet in Ajmer, Rajasthan and the way she is making plans to cope with the problem by means of putting in machines that produce top excellent, eco-friendly and chemical-loose sanitary napkins. Eleven months in the past, whilst Dilsha from Ponnani, Kerala together with her confined understanding in Hindi, stepped foot in Tilonia, she initially convinced herself that she had long gone on a time travel to the start of the twentieth century. She was bowled over to see how common it has become for youngsters as younger as one-year-olds to get married. While most of the parents went to the fields to paintings, their toddlers stayed back home and cooked rotis and did the dishes.

But was that the most surprising? Definitely not! “Most of the ladies right here refused to use sanitary napkins and relied on cloth pads as an alternative. But this wasn’t a practical choice because Tilonia faces acute water shortage and for this reason it’s not possible for them to clean those clothes properly,” says Dhilsha. But why is there such a large nay to sanitary napkins, we asked. Dhilsha tells us the reason. “The village has a sanitary napkin manufacturing machine that they brought from Arunachalam Muruganantham in 2010. But right here, the pads are pressed barefoot, instead of a machine. Because of this reason, these pads can’t be used for too long and so, most of the girls gave up.” Puzzled, Dhilsha was determined to try it herself. The results had been the same. What appalled her the most was to see girls who added the most inexpensive whisper napkins and reused them.

Dhilsha knew that she had to do something positive about it. But what good can one female with confined budget and little expertise inside the language do? Nevertheless, she wasn’t prepared to give up. After more than one months of studies and gaining knowledge of Hindi, she travelled to numerous locations on a challenge to installation a sanitary napkin manufacturing unit. “Given the circumstance in Tilonia, a disposable product is the only alternative. So I suggested, “Why not make it green and inexpensive too,” she says. The quest ended whilst she discovered a system maker in Gwalior. “Finding the uncooked cloth turned into the second shortcoming. The Padman’s merchandise have been fabricated from cotton and plastic. Most of the eco friendly pad companies were not equipped to show their merchandise too. But eventually, I found a producer of green plastic in Indore,” she says.

The device and the products are ready to arrive. The women are a lot aware of menstrual hygiene and are equipped to use the new pads. In order to fund the undertaking, Dhilsha has also begun a crowdfunding marketing campaign in Ketto. “Once the price range are equipped, we can start the manufacturing soon. The fellowship is finishing in 2 months. But I’ll stay back right here until things turn out nicely,” concludes a hopeful Dhilsha.
